The Black Dog

This isn't all that old, but hasn't been on here before. The link takes you to a Word doc, linked from the Lit and Phil website, which is where this lives. Different in style from my usual stuff. See what you think!

  1. Great story, Jools. Really well written. Love the change of tense at the end. Top stuff :) Did you sub this anywhere?

  2. Aw, thanks, Ian! This was one of three stories that won a ghost story competition at the Lit and Phil earlier this year. We got to read our stories to an audience at a special winners' event - gulp! Terrifying, but great fun.

I need to check the competition rules to see how soon I can sub this out elsewhere. I'm fond of this one and I'd like to try to get it more widely read. Fingers crossed!

  3. really cool and creepy tale. Could easily see that as an episode of Tales From the Crypt, or Darkside. I love the opening part with the note.

  4. Thank you, Sean! :) I really fancy writing a novella-length ghost story. Gawd knows what I'd do with it then, but it may yet happen!

  5. Myself, I love the novella length format to read, and would love to be able to write something in the 20-40K range, but for some reason, agents and publishers, unless you are Stephen King, won't touch them.

Wish it were different as I believe a really good story can be told within that word count and doesn't require the time investment of an 80K story

  6. I agree, novellas rock! Pulp Press are publishing them, but other than that, as you say, they are very difficult to place.

Still, first things first - I need to finish the novel I used NaNoWriMo as the impetus to get off the mark!
